FG Finally Withdraw Charges Against Saraki & Ekweremadu

Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu have finally have a sigh of relief as the federal government of Nigeria has decided to withdraw the senate rules forgery charge it filed against them.

The two principal officers of the senate have been standing trial since June 2016 alongside a former Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, and a former Deputy clerk, Ben Efeturi.

The quartet were arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on June 10, 2016.

The senate rules forgery charge was filed following a police investigation report which stated that the senate rules used in conducting the National Assembly elections that produced Saraki and Ekweremadu as senate president and deputy senate president respectively was forged.

The election had also been surrounded by controversies over the preference of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leadership for Senator Ahmed Lawan’s emergence as senate president instead of Saraki.

Saraki’s dogged insistence on vying for the position and the fact that the election held at a time other APC senators were absent from the chambers created disharmony within the party, cracks of which remain visible.

The motion to withdraw the senate rules forgery charge against Saraki and Ekweremadu was filed on Thursday by a litigation officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Odubu Loveme, reports Premium Times.

In the affidavit accompanying the motion, Loveme said counsel to the Federal Government on the matter, Aliyu Umar SAN, on September 30 in the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, told him that he had studied the case diary and “had decided to amend the charge in the manner stated on the face of the motion paper”.

“That I depose to this affidavit in good faith believing same to be correct to the best of my knowledge and information and in accordance with the Oaths Act Cap 01 laws of the Federation of Nigeria,” Loveme said.

An amended charge was similarly filed in the light of the withdrawal of the charge against Saraki and Ekweremadu. On the amended charge, only Maikasuwa and Efeturi will continue to answer to the senate rules forgery charge before the High Court of the FCT
