Traditional Game Competition Among Secondary Schools To Be Held In LagosTo promote traditional sports, the Lagos State Sports Commission says all is set for the maiden traditional games championships for secondary schools.
According to Punch, the commission’s spokesperson, Titi Oshodi-Eko, said in a statement on Monday in Lagos that the competition was for secondary school students from the three senatorial districts of the state. The statement said that the championships would be held from October 12 to 14 at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island.
On the breakdown of the sports, the statement said that 20 schools would participate in "Ayo" and "Abula", while the adult category would feature "Kokawa." “The finals for the events will come up on Friday at 1pm,’’ the statement said.
The commission’s Chairman, Deji Tinubu, said it would be better to engage the students in sports to keep them away from vices and as a means of socio-economic development. “Sports will keep our children healthy and take them away from vices which are always better, most importantly creating a healthy structure for the future.
“This is important now that the government has been talking about using sports to drive entertainment and tourism in Nigeria,’’ Tinubu said.
