Angry Students Beats Up Governor's Aide Over 300k Monbilisation Fee

A special assistant to Cross River state Governor Ben Ayade was on Monday, December 19, assaulted by a group of students at the U J Esuene stadium in Calabar for allegedly withholding the N300,000 mobilisation fee released by the governor.

Michael Abuo, the governor’s special assistant on Student Matters was in charge of mobilising students of higher institutions in the state to celebrate the governor’s recent victory at the Supreme Court.

According to the Punch, a group of students, numbering over 100, alleged that Abuo refused to share the mobilisation fee as instructed by the governor thereby drawing the ire of the students.

Abuo took to his heels as the students attacked him and had to jump over the stadium fence before he was rescued by policemen who thereafter forced the students to disperse.

Punch reports that Governor Ayade was said to have released the sum of N1m to each of the 29 commissioners and some other aides to mobilise residents of the state for the victory celebration in Calabar.

One of the students from the University of Calabar, who simply gave her name as Josephine, said they had appealed to the aide to release the fund, but he refused.

She said, “We got the information from a reliable source that the governor approved N300,000 for us for mobilisation, but he refused to release the money.

“We are over 200 that came from different parts of the state for this celebration. Instead of releasing the money, he became infuriated when we confronted him. He has been short-changing us for too long.”

Abuo said the attack was sponsored; adding that it was not true that he squandered the mobilisation fee set aside for the students.
