President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to investigate the involvement of top officials of his government in corruption, and prosecute anyone found wanting.
Corruption: Investigate And Prosecute Top Officials In My Government - Buhari Orders AGF
A statement by the president’s media aide, Garba Shehu, on Sunday December 18, reads:
“The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media, in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the administration.
“In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them is liable he will not escape prosecution.”
Some of Buhari’s top ministers and appointees have either been accused of, or linked with corruption. In an interesting twist, the AGF who was given the mandate to undertake the probe is himself facing corruption charges, Thisday reports.
Last week, the Senate asked the president to suspend the Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal, and ensure his prosecution over the alleged breach of Nigerian laws in the handling contracts awarded by the Presidential Initiative for the North East, (PINE).
The senate also rejected the confirmation of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, following a damning report by the Department of State Services (DSS), which alleged that he was corrupt and had been leading a double life.
