Mysterious Fire Destroys Shops, Goods In Ondo
Fire has gutted the popular Odopetu market in Akure, Ondo State on Thursday, 29 December, destroying food items and properties worth millions of naira.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but traders and eye witness said they had no idea how the fire came about, and the Ondo State Fire Service were unavailable to put out the fire, as efforts to reach them were unsuccessful.
Some of the food items destroyed by the fire, included rice, beans, tubers of yam, fowl, palm and vegetable oil.
Chairman of the Akure South Local Government, Mr Bayo Alarapon, where the market is located, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that a panel would be set up to investigate how it happened.
It is very unfortunate that this kind of incident has happened during this hard time of recession. On our own part, we shall look for ways to assist the affected traders.
