Fellaini Scores In Manchester United's Impressive 2-0 EFL Win Over Hull [REPORT]

Manchester United beat Hull City 2-0 in Tuesday  night's English Football League (EFL), Cup semifinal first leg at Old Trafford courtesy of goals from midfielders Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini.

Mata, enjoying a good run in front of the goal over the past weeks, broke Hull’s resilience in the 56th minute before substitute Fellaini made cemented the victory late on.

It was a ninth consecutive victory in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s men and puts the Red Devils in a steady position ahead of the return leg at Hull on January 26.

Mourinho made seven changes to the team that breezed past Reading 4-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday, but United maintained their intensity, pounding the Hull goal area with intent.

Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic produced a one-handed save to deny Mata inside two minutes before palming a long-range effort from Paul Pogba over the crossbar.

The Premier League’s bottom club offered an attacking threat of their own as halftime approached with Adama Diomande giving United a scare when he headed against the post from an off-side position, while Robert Snodgrass and Hernandez tested David de Gea before the interval.

Wayne Rooney looked set to make United history in the 51st minute when Pogba’s flighted pass set him racing in on the goal from the right, however he drilled his shot inches wide of the far post.

Then Mata provided the breakthrough, volleying at the back post after Antonio Valencia’s cross from the right was headed back across goal by Mkhitaryan.

Diomande came close to drawing the visitors level with an acrobatic effort at the other end, before Pogba curled a free-kick against the left-hand post as United looked to double their lead.

With injury time approaching, Fellaini’s looping header, off a Matteo Darmian’s cross, beat Huddlestone on the line for United’s second goal.

Liverpool will play away at Southampton in the first leg of the second semifinal tonight.
